Events include juried Art & Craft Show, children’s activities, art exhibits, music, farmer’s market and bake sale. Events at the National Park Service Visitor’s Center include a children’s art exhibit and informative workshops on a variety of topics including sustainability and community-based food systems. See the Great River Greening website at http://www.greatrivergreening.org for more information. ________________________________ August 17, 2008 - Namekagon River Memory Day Noon to 5 p.m., Namekagon River Visitor Center - Join county historical societies, the Cable Natural History Museum, and the National Park Service in recalling times gone by. A logging exhibit from the Sawyer County Historical Society, a boating exhibit from the Washburn Historical Society, and the river section of the Smithsonian’s “Between Fences” exhibit will be on display. Take part in learning some history of the area and educating others with your memories and knowledge. Come share stories that can be recorded or jotted down, bring in photographs that you are willing to have scanned or copied. Help keep the memories alive and history from being lost by having your memories recorded. The Namekagon River Visitor Center is located in Trego on Highway 63, one mile east of Highway 53. Call 715-635-8346 for information. ________________________________ August 16, 2008 –St. Croix River Memory Day Noon to 5:00 p.m., Marshland Center - A display on local historic roads and a history of Pearl Springs cabins will help get the memories going. Stories can be recorded or jotted down and photographs that you are willing to share can be scanned or copied. Share your knowledge of how places like landings or campsites got their names. Help keep the memories alive and the history of your Riverway from being lost. The Marshland Center is located on Highway 70, 5 miles west of Grantsburg, 11 miles east of Pine City, on the Minnesota side of the river. Call 320-629-2148 for information. ________________________________ June 21-22, 2008 - GOT RIVER? FEST Wild River Outfitters, 15177 State Rd. 70, Grantsburg, WI 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Take part in the National Park Service Junior Ranger program, St. Croix Chippewa activities, crafters, wine tasting, river song singing and drawings for a canoe trip, paddles, t-shirts, caps, etc. Also includes an 11 a.m. Saturday ceremony to honor Vice-President Walter Mondale and the late Senator Gaylord Nelson for their efforts in passing the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Special rates on canoe/kayak trips are available. For more information, call 715-463-2254. ______________________________________________ June 19-22, 2008 - Yellow River Echos (Forts Folle Avoine) Forts Folle Avoine near Danbury is located on the Yellow River, a tributary of the St. Croix. It is a living history site where reconstructed fur trade posts occupy the actual sites where they were once operated from 1802 to 1805, alongside an authentic Woodland Indian Village. The theme is Meet the waters, Meet the People, Celebrate our Nature. Schedule: Saturday, April 19 -2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 20 at 1 p.m. Threaded together with Bluegrass, this musical combines slide shows, readings, songs, dramatic reenactments and dancing. A Big Top performance is a true treat for any age. For ticket information, see http://www.festivaltheatre.org or call 715/483-3387. ______________________________________________ April 15, 2008 - 9th Annual St. Croix Basin Protection Conference "Protecting the St. Croix River Basin: 40 Years of Policies and Partnerships" Feature presentations include: State of the Basin: A 40-Year Review, Lake St. Croix: An Impaired Water and Planning for Protection: Implementation of the MN-WI St. Croix Basin Nutrient Agreement. Afternoon sessions bring a variety of perspectives, tools and case study examples providing options for the goal implementation of 20% nutrient reduction by year 2020 in the St. Croix Basin. The conference will close with a scenic tour of the St. Croix as the National Park Service presents “St. Croix River: A Northwood’s Journey.” For more information, see http://basineducation.uwex.edu/stcroix/.
